Zhong You is currently a Professor of Engineering Science at University of Oxford. He obtained BS, MS and PhD from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Dalian University of Technology and University of Cambridge, respectively. His research is concerned with the design and realisation of novel deployable structures which are a type of unconventional structures capable of large shape changes. He is particularly interested in the underlying principles governing large geometrical transformations of these structures and ways to enhance their mechanical performances. He publishes extensively in prestigious journals such as Science. His current research focuses on deployable structures and mechanisms, origami structures and expandable medical devices for minimally invasive surgery. Zhongs work was selected for the Science Day exhibition at the Buckingham Palace, which showcased the state-of-the-art of British scientific research. Science reported his research into origami structures in its profile section. He frequently chairs conferences on origami structures, including the 7th OSME in 2018, which is the largest gathering of origami researchers and artists in the world.

Recently origami folding, a traditional art form of paper folding, has been of increasing interest to engineers. It has been found that the formation of origami structures and the shape change capability of some origami objects can be readily parameterised and applied to the development of new structures and devices. Since most of the sheet materials used in engineering applications are relatively rigid in comparison with paper, and they have non-negligible thickness, particular attention has been drawn on developing ways to fold these thick panels.

In this talk, I shall focus on methods of developing folding schemes for thick rigid panels. Starting by explaining the difference between folding a thin sheet and a thick panel, I shall introduce a method that enables folding of thick panels in a way which is kinematically equivalent to that of a zero-thickness sheet. Then I shall move to the compact folding of thick panels with uniform thickness. An approach based on the Hamiltonian circuit will be presented, which commonly results in multiple degrees of freedom assemblies. Methods to develop single degree of freedom folding will follow, which lead to a number of very interesting deployable assemblies. An immediate application of these structural concepts is for large aerospace deployable structures such as solar panels and antennas which need to be folded compactly for launch and subsequently deployed precisely in space.
